A vintage example of the iconic LC4 chaise longues, designed by Le Corbusier in collaboration with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand in 1928. The first mass production of the LC4 was manufactured by Thonet in 1930 and only 172 were made, and was then known as the B306. The design was dropped by Thonet soon after as it proved to be too expensive to make, only for Le Corbusier to issue a production under his own name in 1959. The chaise then became known simply as the Le Corbusier chaise and gained much more commercial success. It wasn't until 1964 that Cassina began producing the chaise, and named it the LC4. Each LC4 frame is stamped with a serial number issued by Cassina. The LC4 is undoubtedly one of the most iconic pieces of furniture of the twentieth century. Early Cassina LC4 stamps are formatted simply 'LC4 [serial number]' along with the Cassina mark. Later models additionally include a red 'Maestri' sticker Modern examples additionally include an engraved signature of Le Corbusier, Perriand, and Jeanneret. This example is engraved with 'LC4' and the serial number '31620' , along with the plain Cassina mark. It also includes the original Cassina product take, a very rare feature! Condition report: In very good condition with wear commensurate with age. The leather is in excellent condition and has had a light reconditioning to extend its durability. The supporting straps are in good condition. Some are slightly slackened, but still strong and supportive. The seat pad keeps its shape very well. The head rest is in good condition. All of the straps are strong and in tact. Some cosmetic wear to the leather buckle straps is evident as shown in the pictures. The chrome frame is in good condition with some areas of ageing as pictured. The metal base is solid and sturdy with all rubber feet present. Some ageing to the base as evident in the pictures.
