To call the style of this chair "Brutalist" would not do justice to this masterpiece of engineering and craftmanship. True, all the construction details are in full view while the materials are honest and robust. Yet, this chair emits an unbelievable elegance and provokes a smile everytime you look at it. It encourages you to discover all elements of its construction; from every angle.
Look at the unusual six legs and the flowershaped backrest. Mere details such as the front leg that is split right below the armrest. The beautiful wood connections, the rope stitching of the leather... we could go on!
This set has gained an unbelievable patina over the years; it shows its soul. It makes this chair even more desirable. Very solid frame with no rips in the leather. No repairs.
Stefan During is a Dutch furniture and violin maker with his workshop on one of the Dutch isles called Texel. He has his own ideas about furniture making. He only uses the best trees he can find, all local wood. For his chairs he uses vegetable-tanned leather, latex and hair. The pieces are finished in linseed oil or soap.
The model name of this particular chair is 'Zespoot' or 'Six leg' in English. It dates from the early eighties. What makes this piece even more unique is the presence of a matching foot stool. The 'Zespoot' offers very comfortable seating.
Two books have been written about Stefan During. This chair features on the cover of one of them, it's about all his designs. This hardcover book will be included in the sale, signed by the master himself.
His work hardly comes for sale on the open market!
