A small Art Deco console table or writing desk with a drawer finished in walnut and maple veneers.
Almost ecclesiastical in style with its pedestal base, this charming console has been used for many years as a small writing desk - there is 61.5cm 'knee clearance' below the drawer. Finished largely in highly-figured walnut veneers and in a quarter-matched pattern on the top. The table top has been restored and re-polished. The curved back rail is finished in a burr maple veneer with an asymmetrical detail on the right-hand side. Although the table was presumably designed to sit against a wall, the back is well finished and with some decorative detail so the table could also be used freestanding where it would be visible from all sides.
There is a drawer underneath which has a small label inside with the words 'Guaranteed handmade by British craftsmen'. This exact label was used by the furnituremaker Alfred Cox in conjunction with the AC stamp on their pieces. Alfred Cox produced a number of fine modernist designs which were retailed through Heal & Son in London throughout the 1960s. It seems likely that this console was also made by Alfred Cox, although the Art Deco lines and use of burr veneers suggest that this was an early piece from the late 1940s.
