Rare round nickel-plated brass wall mirror designed by the very great Gio Ponti in the 1950s.
This iconic mirror represents precisely "The Loves of the Mermaid," this is its recognizable name.
The mirror depicts a small boat with two sails housing a sailor, portrayed in the act of kissing a mermaid. Mythology remembers mermaids as beings somewhere between a fish and a woman; it is said that the song of mermaids was an inescapable lure for sailors who sailed those waters, so much so that many times they were captivated by the divine song and beauty of mermaids. Sirens, on the other hand, were portrayed as wonderful creatures but with an abominable secret: their beauty and sweetness of voice served to lure fishermen to feed on them. Suffice it to recall the very famous story of Odysseus and his sailors written by Homer, in which Odysseus had himself tied to the ship's mast, precisely so that he would not fall into temptation like his fellow sailors.
The mirror is round and is made of very charming nickel-plated brass. At the top we see a nickel-plated brass squiggle suitable for hanging the mirror on the wall. The design is framed by a thick round Greek in the style of the main design.
The mirror is part of a rare edition by Gio Ponti dedicated to the Sirens.
The mirror is suitable in any home steeped in taste and culture.
