The motif of the movement by folding up, stowing and easily transporting the stool is devoted to the functionality of this new design at that time. Due to the more economical use of steel tube and the omission of the side seat belts, it is more effective in material consumption than its run -shaped predecessor (club armchair B3) and offers significantly higher seating comfort.
“I chose metal for this furniture to reach the properties of modern room elements. The heavy padding of a comfortable armchair is replaced by the tightly tense fabric surface and some slightly dimensioned, springy pipe brackets. This also included that the construction was no longer hidden, but was a chrome -flashed part of the appearance, ”said Breuer.
This kinetic line, the departure of modernity, is now understandable up to the young Bauhaus designers.
In 1980 the D4 was included in the constant collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The foldable steel tube club armchair with belt covering was created in 1926/27.

Marcel Lajos Breuer
*1902 † 1981
was a Hungarian-American architect and designer who is considered one of the inventors of the modern steel tube furniture.
After an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the furniture workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar, in 1925 he was appointed young champion and head of the furniture workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Breuer worked in the Walter Gropius office for several years and then started his own business.
After his escape to the United States in 1933, he built the architecture aculty of Harvard University, including with Gropius.
In 1946 Breuer gave up his teaching at Harvard University. He then devoted himself almost exclusively to construction activity and produced a remarkable oeuvre. Especially in his luxurious residential buildings, he solved his designs from the strictly rationalist, universal architecture view of the “White Modern” by trying to combine regional conditions with a modern design language. On the other hand, he realized numerous large orders, such as the design of a whole winter sports resort in the French Alps (Flaine, from 1960). In 1952 he received the order to build the UNESCO building in Paris together with Pier Luigi Nervi and Bernard Ziehfuss. In 1965 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters [3] and in 1966 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Nel 1965 è stato eletto all'American Academy of Arts and Letters [3] e nel 1966 all'American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
