La Menace I is an original color etching and aquatint on wove paper, realized in 1978 by the Belgian illustrator Jean Michel Folon (1934-2005). Hand-signed in capital letter and in pencil on the lower left margin. Hand-numbered in pencil and in Arabic numerals on the lower right margin. from a limited edition of 50 prints. The complete edition is composed of 50 specimens numbered 1/50 to 50/50 on wove paper, and 10 artist proofs numbered EA I/X to EA X/X. This original print was created in association with Christian Guerin and printed on his press to Cailleville in France and published by Alice Editions. with the embossed stamp "Alice Editions", and the autograph inscriptions on plate, on the lower right margin and written on the reverse: "Décembre 1978 Cailleville". In excellent conditions, full margins, with bright colors, this original print is an illustration with the unmistakable sign of the great graphic master, Jean Michel Folon. Image dimensions: 47.5 x 59 cm. Jean-Michel Folon (March 1, 1934, Uccle, Belgium - October 20, 2005, Monaco) was a Belgian artist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor. Folon was born in Brussels in 1934 where he studied architecture. In 1955 he settled in a gardener’s house in the outskirts of Paris. During five years he drew morning, noon and night. In 1985 he moved to Monaco where he worked in a big workshop surrounded by numerous artists. The first exhibition of his watercolors was in New York in 1969 in the Lefebre Gallery. One year later he exhibited in Tokyo and in the Il Milione gallery in Milan. He also participated in the XXVth Biennale of Venice. In 1973 he joined the selection of Belgian artists in the XXVth Biennale of São Paulo where he was granted the Grand Price of Painting. During the years his work concentrated on different techniques: watercolor, etching, silkscreen, illustrations, mosaics, stained glass, ... which showed the diversity of his art. He also designed numerous posters, often for humanitarian causes. Around 1988 he created his first sculptures made out of wood. from then on moved on creating scultures in clay, plaster, bronze and marble, while continuing painting. Several museums dedicated exhibits to him. Among those the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1971, the Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1976, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London in 1977, the Musée Picasso d'Antibes in 1984, the Museo Correr in Venice in 1986, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires in 1987, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1990, La Pedrera in Barcelona in 1993, the Bunkamura in Tokyo in 1995, the Musée Olympique in Lausanne in 1996 and the Museo Morandi in Bologna in 1996-97. In 1999 an exhibition of big sculptures was presented in the Galerie Guy Pieters in Saint-Paul de Vence. In 2000 he opened the Fondation Folon, which presents the essentials of his work in the region he grew up in. In 2001 the city of Lisbon presented a big retrospective of his sculptures in the Castelo de São Jorge, which dominates the city. In 2003 he created the decoration for Puccini’s La Bohème for the Puccini Festival in Italy. The president of the French Repuplic, Jacques Chirac, awarded him the Legion of Honour in the Palais d’Elysée. In 2004 he became a UNICEF ambassador. In 2005 the city of Florence opened to him the doors of the Palazzo Vecchio and the Forte Belvedere for a grand retrospective of his work. Jean-Michel Folon died in Monaco on 20th October 2005 at the age of 71.

Folon è nato a Bruxelles nel 1934 dove ha studiato architettura. Nel 1955 si stabilisce in una casa di giardinieri alla periferia di Parigi. Per cinque anni disegna mattina, mezzogiorno e sera. Nel 1985 si trasferisce a Monaco dove lavora in un grande atelier circondato da numerosi artisti. La prima mostra dei suoi acquerelli si tiene a New York nel 1969 presso la Lefebre Gallery. Un anno dopo espone a Tokyo e nella galleria Il Milione di Milano. Partecipa anche alla XXV Biennale di Venezia. Nel 1973 si unisce alla selezione di artisti belgi alla XXV Biennale di San Paolo, dove ottiene il Grand Price of Painting. Nel corso degli anni il suo lavoro si concentra su tecniche diverse: acquerello, acquaforte, serigrafia, illustrazioni, mosaici, vetrate, ... che mostrano la diversità della sua arte. Ha anche disegnato numerosi manifesti, spesso per cause umanitarie. Intorno al 1988 ha creato le sue prime sculture in legno. Da allora ha continuato a creare sculture in argilla, gesso, bronzo e marmo, continuando a dipingere. Diversi musei gli hanno dedicato mostre. Tra questi il Musée des Arts Décoratifs di Parigi nel 1971, il Boymans van Beuningen di Rotterdam nel 1976, l'Institute of Contemporary Art di Londra nel 1977, il Musée Picasso d'Antibes nel 1984, il Museo Correr di Venezia nel 1986, museo de Bellas Artes di Buenos Aires nel 1987, il Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York nel 1990, La Pedrera di Barcellona nel 1993, il Bunkamura di Tokyo nel 1995, il Musée Olympique di Losanna nel 1996 e il Museo Morandi di Bologna nel 1996-1997. Nel 1999 una mostra di grandi sculture è stata presentata alla Galerie Guy Pieters di Saint-Paul de Vence. Nel 2001 la città di Lisbona ha presentato una grande retrospettiva delle sue sculture nel Castelo de São Jorge, che domina la città. Il presidente della Repubblica francese, Jacques Chirac, gli ha conferito la Legion d'Onore al Palazzo dell'Eliseo. Nel 2004 è diventato ambasciatore dell'UNICEF. Nel 2005 la città di Firenze gli ha aperto le porte di Palazzo Vecchio e del Forte Belvedere per una grande retrospettiva del suo lavoro. Jean-Michel Folon è morto a Monaco il 20 ottobre 2005 all'età di 71 anni.
