A stunning and rarely seen 1960s teak sideboard designed by the famous Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen for G-Plan. The smallest of the sideboards he designed for G-Plan, but still featuring all of his stylish design touches synonymous with his ‘Danish Design’ range, such as the fine shadow gap around the perimeter, square handles, sculptured legs and front stretcher. The compact sideboard is ideally suited to modern rooms, only measuring 5 foot wide, with three drawers and one cupboard with single adjustable shelf. Stamped G-Plan Danish Design and signed Ib Kofod-Larsen to the inside of the drawer, and dated 8.11.63 to the back.
In very good period condition and has obviously been well looked after although there is evidence of a little ‘hoover-rash’ to the bottom of both front legs, a tiny mark to the top of the front right corner, and a small area of loss at the back, which I have shown in the images.
Launched back in 1953, G-Plan was a brainchild of a visionary furniture manufacturer Donald Gomme. After years of post-war austerity and rationing, there was a shortage of striking, well-made furniture. Donald Gomme saw this as an opportunity for mid-century design solutions and perspectives to emerge. In the 1960s G-Plan made a clever move and partnered with a reputable Danish designer and architect Ib Kofod-Larsen. This brought the sleek, minimalist Scandinavian feel to G-Plan’s already vast offer. Kofod-Larsen’s collections celebrated the natural beauty of raw wood and its unique grains.
