This simple pitcher is a production of the Elchinger ceramic workshops. Full-bellied, with a beak formed from pinching the earth, it has an endearing peasant sobriety. We imagine this pitcher on a beautiful rustic bistro table, used as a water or pinot noir pot, or even used as a pretty vase on a primitive sideboard.
The Alsatian pitcher is made of glazed earthenware, nicely pot-bellied. It is in very good condition but shows some traces of time including a rubbing on the beak and a small lack or defect of cooking on the belly. The stamp of the Elchinger ceramic workshops in Soufflenheim is present at its base. The piece is numbered.
8-12cm in diameter, 18cm in height.
“Céramiques Elchinger” is a family business established in Soufflenheim in Alsace in 1834. Since that time, generations have succeeded one another and offered a production that is as varied as it is avant-garde. Léon Elchinger (1871-1942) left his mark with his artistic stoneware productions as well as magnificent Art Nouveau and then Art Deco pottery, with magnificent colors and luster. Less known than Chambost, Ruelland, Jouve and Capron, Fernand Elchinger (1911-1975) will be one of the great mid-century ceramists. We are fans of his free-form productions, “handkerchief” vases and especially the play of contrast between deep blacks and bright yellows, reds or greens!
