18th century German old master painting, oil on canvas, in a giltwood frame, depicting a painter. Johann Conrad Seekatz came from a German family of artists who were active in the Darmstadt/Worms area for over 170 years. He is certainly the most famous member of this family. His further training with the Mannheim court painter Philipp Hieronymus Brinckmann (from 1748) was of great importance for his artistic work. In Mannheim he also got to know the famous electoral painting collection there. In 1753 he took up a position with the reigning Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt. In addition, Seekatz also looked to Frankfurt am Main, where his mostly small-format genre pieces were extremely popular with private collectors. Johann Caspar Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's father, acquired at least 17 works by Seekatz, and in 1762 the artist portrayed Goethe and his family in pastoral costume in front of an Arcadian landscape. from 1765, a series of 17 overdoors were built for Braunhardt Castle near Darmstadt. These works are considered the high point of his work. The present "Bacchant procession" was created in the same period. Due to its dimensions, the "Bacchant Train" is one of the unusually large-format works by Johann Conrad Seekatz. In the course of the 18th century, a bourgeois upper class had developed in Darmstadt, from which the artist received commissions. Various works were created in a larger format. Emmerling assumes that the artist first sketched and executed some of the compositions in a smaller format in order to then transfer them to the size agreed with the client. Dimensions: (unframed) 93 x 72cm; (framed) 97 x 76cm. Provenance: an important private collection. Good condition overall, painting may benefit from being cleaned - faint outline of a previous frame to right side; may benefit from light re-touches in areas..
