Jean Robert Ithier was born in France on September 11, 1904 in Villemomble and died on March 9, 1977 in Sevran. From 1926 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, where he coincided with artists such as Lorenzo Codini, Frantisek Vit Blazek, Loretta Hines Howard, Eugen Clermont and Pliny Armin Colombi.
His work is mainly based on landscape painting and views of Paris. He takes as a reference the painters of the 1920s, European artists living in a convulsive moment after the First World War. This painting of the 20's is known as "return to order" because it tries to make a modern painting without giving up figuration and traditional themes of art history, but without neglecting the baggage of the avant-garde as Cubism, Fauvism, etc.. In Paris a group known as the School of Paris emerged, formed by artists who made a painting that was difficult to classify, but with a common denomination: the personal character of the author. Among them were André Derain, Amadeo Modigliani, Constantin Brâncuşi, etc.
Riders of the Republican Guard
The painter, in this oil on masonite (a kind of board made of compressed wood fibers and subjected to steam) portrays a group of horsemen of the Republican Guard, many of them appear playing an instrument. The rapid and material brushstrokes stand out, brushstrokes that take shape in the distance. As for the colors, the red areas contrast with the green of the background.
The French Republican Guard is part of the National Gendarmerie, an armed force under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior. This guard facilitates honor and security missions of the French high state authorities, and they are also in charge of police missions in rural and peri-urban areas. In addition, it contributes to the cultural image of France with both its special and musical formations.
On the lower left is the signature "J. ITHIER". This painting was acquired at the Château de Joantho, a building owned by the Joantho d'Aroue family of nobles. It is located on the Via Podiensis of the Jacobin route of the Way of St. James. Consisting of several buildings, the main building is composed of three floors and an attic illuminated by skylights. It also has a chapel that the lords of Joantho had built, another element that reaffirms the importance and power of the family.

ITHIER".
