Censer/Garden pot, Meiji Period, 19th century – Japan/France
This molten bronze censer is of Japanese origin and was made during the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), in the nineteenth century. The container is decorated with reliefs (bas -relief and altorrelieves) of large birds in flight in a leafy landscape, with Japanese sakura flowers and clouds in the background. The bronze has a delicate outer patina. It has a picture or signature at the bottom.
The ornaments in Ormolu also attract attention (golden bronze with gold to mercury). These upper and lower strips or frames have a draft auction. They were placed in France at the end of the 19th century following the Japanese fashion of the late nineteenth century making it a gardener. That is, this Japanese censer for France would probably be imported, at a time when Japanese art was in great vogue and greatly influence era (Napoleon III style).
Dimensions: 18 x 16 cm.
