Oil painting representing a hunt.
French school of the end of the XIXth century
In a Louis XIV style gilded frame
A pack of Beagle hounds, with pickers, precedes the hunters still in the woods, when the deer comes out of the thicket. One of the pickers sounds the trigger, indicating the position and the hunting action.
These hunting pictures, often anonymous and due to the brushes of amateurs, flourished at the end of the 19th century. A French bourgeoisie, opulent and rural, likes to decorate its residences of these reminders of this entertainment of the lords and which is not reserved any more to the nobility, but still "marks" in the collective imagination like a bond with it. The brightness of the outfits, the barking, the horns and the savagery of the chases whip the blood of the spectators and flatter the modern Nemrod. The hunt is a performance that the owner-hunters give to the peasants and their people. A party in which everyone participates, by preparing it, by following it, or by telling it... One thinks of Vialar's "La grande meute" (The Great Pack), Renoir's "La régle du jeu" (The Rules of the Game), and of the Saint-Hubert celebrations in the shrill tumult of the cries of the dogs and the masters. Paradoxically, painted, this externalization of the violence becomes here as wise... as an image.
