Titled on the lower margin: Dame Romaine dans son habit à la Dragonne 1750. Signed on the lower margin: Léon Gaucherel. On the upper side the number of the plate is impressed: (12). Excennet conditions of the plate. The sheet presents some foxing on the lower right margin. Excellent etching depicting a female standing figure in a long elegant and ancient dress. The plate is very small but the figure of the woman is very refined. This artwork has been realized by the French artist and engraver Léon Gaucherel (Paris, 1816 - Paris, 1886). Léon Gaucherel learned his art from his childhood friend Eugène Viollet-le-Duc who he accompanied to Sicily between 1836 and 1837. He illustrated a Restoration Project of Notre-Dame proposed by Viollet-le-Duc and Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus in 1843. In 1844, he became a master in the practice of etching - he was nicknamed ''the father of etching''. He also produced engravings for the Gazette des beaux-arts, or the Archaeological Annals, representing landscapes and decorative architectural motifs. In 1875, he became the artistic director of the illustrated weekly magazine L'Art, founded by Eugène Véron. He recruited, among the others, Auguste-Hilaire Léveillé and many other engravers for the illustrations. He is also the author of numerous watercolors, drawings and portraits.The Sainte-Menehould Art and History Museum has some of his prints. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. Condizioni eccentriche della targa. Il foglio presenta un po' di foxing sul margine inferiore destro. Ottima incisione raffigurante una figura femminile in piedi in un lungo abito elegante e antico. Il piatto è molto piccolo ma la figura della donna è molto raffinata. L'opera è stata realizzata dall'artista e incisore francese Léon Gaucherel (Parigi, 1816 - Parigi, 1886). Léon Gaucherel ha imparato la sua arte dall'amico d'infanzia Eugène Viollet-le-Duc che ha accompagnato in Sicilia tra il 1836 e il 1837. Illustra un progetto di restauro di Notre-Dame proposto da Viollet-le-Duc e Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus nel 1843. Nel 1844 divenne maestro nella pratica dell'acquaforte - fu soprannominato ''il padre dell'acquaforte''. Realizza anche incisioni per la Gazette des beaux-arts, o Annali archeologici, che rappresentano paesaggi e motivi architettonici decorativi. Nel 1875 divenne direttore artistico del settimanale illustrato L'Art, fondato da Eugène Véron. Per le illustrazioni recluta, tra gli altri, Auguste-Hilaire Léveillé e molti altri incisori. È anche autore di numerosi acquerelli, disegni e ritratti. Il Museo d'arte e di storia della Sainte-Menehould possiede alcune delle sue stampe. Queste opere d'arte vengono spedite dall'Italia. Secondo la legislazione vigente, qualsiasi opera d'arte creata in Italia più di 70 anni fa da un artista morto richiede una licenza per l'esportazione indipendentemente dal prezzo di mercato dell'opera.
