Ettore Sottsass (14 September 1917-31 December 2007) was an Italian architect and designer of the late 20th century. His body of designs included furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting and office machine design. Sottsass was born on 14 September 1917 in Innsbruck, Austria, and grew up in Milan, where his father was an architect. In 1956, Ettore Sottsass began working as a design consultant for Olivetti, designing office equipment, typewriters and furniture. Sottsass was hired by Adriano Olivetti, the founder, to work alongside his son, Roberto. There Sottsass made his name as a designer who, through color, form and styling, managed to bring office equipment into the realm of popular culture. Sottsass, Mario Tchou, and Roberto Olivetti won the prestigious 1960 Compasso d’Oro with the Elea 9003, the first Italian mainframe computer. In 1968, the Royal College of Art in London granted Sottsass an honorary doctoral degree.

Ettore Sottsass (14 settembre 1917-31 dicembre 2007) è stato un architetto e designer italiano della fine del XX secolo. La sua produzione comprende mobili, gioielli, vetri, illuminazione e macchine per ufficio. Sottsass è nato il 14 settembre 1917 a Innsbruck, in Austria, ed è cresciuto a Milano, dove il padre era architetto. Nel 1956, Ettore Sottsass inizia a lavorare come consulente di design per Olivetti, progettando apparecchiature per ufficio, macchine da scrivere e mobili. Sottsass fu assunto da Adriano Olivetti, il fondatore, per lavorare al fianco del figlio Roberto. Qui Sottsass si fece conoscere come designer che, attraverso il colore, la forma e lo stile, riuscì a portare le apparecchiature per ufficio nel regno della cultura popolare. Sottsass, Mario Tchou e Roberto Olivetti hanno vinto il prestigioso Compasso d'Oro del 1960 con l'Elea 9003, il primo computer mainframe italiano. Nel 1968, il Royal College of Art di Londra ha conferito a Sottsass una laurea honoris causa
