A great chance for collectors or museums to become an owner of a very important table lamp designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and Jac van den Bosch for their exclusive furniture store " 't Binnenhuis". The pictures 11 and 12 are similar items that were designed by Berlage/Bosch. They all show the repetitive cutouts of circles in the stand (all are in the collections of museums in the Netherlands - except for the lamp now offered). The lamp offered here shows a mixture of industrialism and modernism. With some imagination you can see some resemblance with the Eiffel tower.
Bio:
It is needless to say that the importance of Berlage is widely recognized by museums, architects and designers all over the world. Berlage was tutored by the Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers and in his later period strongly influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright - for whom he worked a small period of time in the USA. Berlage is offently rongly pointed out as the founding father of the Amsterdamse School which he is not - Michel de Klerk is! Berlage and Bosch worked in the so called "Nieuwe Kunst" which can be translated as high class applied art. Each item that was made is of a very high craftsmanship. The "Nieuwe Kunst" can be compared with the style of the Wiener Werkstätte. You're not only buying a lamp! You're buying a work of art!
The life of:
Hendrik Petrus Berlage (February 12th, 1856 - August 12th, 1934), born in Amsterdam, was a prominent Dutch architect.
Berlage studied architecture under Gottfried Semper at the Zurich Institute of Technology during the 1870s after which he travelled extensively through Europe. In the 1880s he formed a partnership in the Netherlands with Theodore Sanders which produced a mixture of practical and utopian projects. A published author, Berlage held memberships in various architectural societies including CIAM I.
Berlage was influenced by the Neo-Romanesque brickwork architecture of Henry Hobson Richardson. This influence is visible in his design for the Amsterdam Commodities Exchange, for which he would also draw on the ideas of Viollet-le-Duc. The load-bearing bare brick walls and the notion of the primacy of space, and of walls as the creators of form, would be the constitutive principles of the 'Hollandse Zakelijkheid' (Dutch Objectivity). A visit Berlage made to the U.S. in 1911 greatly affected his architecture. From then on the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright would be a significant influence. Lectures he gave when returned to Europe would help to disseminate Wright's thoughts in Germany.
Considered the "Father of Modern architecture" in the Netherlands and the intermediary between the Traditionalists and the Modernists, Berlage's theories inspired most Dutch architectural groups of the 1920's, including the Traditionalists, the Amsterdam School, De Stijl and the New Objectivists. He received the British RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1932.
Berlage died at The Hague in 1934.
State comprando un'opera d'arte!
Berlage morì all'Aia nel 1934.
