Classicist chair
Southern Germany (Nuremberg)
Mahogany and others
early 19th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 91 x 46 x 46 cm, seat height: 49 cm
:
Rare, classicist chair in mahogany with fine inlays.
The conical square legs support the thickly veneered frame, which is decorated with an ornamental frieze set off by maple thread inlays.
The same ornamentation can also be found on the upper crossboard of the backrest.
The centre panel of the backrest is decorated with curved shapes and contrasting light and dark marquetry.
Chairs with ornamental bands inlaid in a very similar style in the upper crosspiece of the backrest are known from the former property of the Beauharnais families. They were made around 1805 in Nuremberg for Eichstätt Palace.
Even if the chair offered here was executed in a somewhat simpler form, it is quite conceivable that it was made in the same workshop or at least in its circle.
Condition:
Restored condition suitable for everyday use. The surface has been refreshed with shellac. Newly upholstered, newly covered.
The above-mentioned chairs from Eichstätt Castle are described in more detail in the following literature:
Lydia L. Dewiel - Stuhldesign vom Barock bis zur Moderne p. 152
Wolfgang L. Eller - Möbel des Klassizismus Louis XVI und Empire p. 271
