Bronze of Jean Claude - aka James - Pradier (1790-1852), French artist born in Geneva. A pupil of Lemot with original working methods, he is considered one of the greatest sculptors during the reign of Louis Philippe.
The central theme of his works, Femininity in all its Grace is represented here in the figure of Phryne.
The Young Woman wears a necklace, a bracelet and a headband in her Hair, pulled up in a bun. With her face pointing to the ground, she seems to be waiting for the verdict of her accusers.
The naked body of the famous Greek courtesan is partially covered with a large, broadly folded drapery. The latter is frailly restrained by a tie tied under her chest, while her right hand seems to want to reposition this Toga removed by her lawyer and Hyperid lover. By this act, the pretty Hétaïre will be acquitted by her Judges, subjugated by her Beauty.
Behind her, a Large Vase with Striped Decorations is also somewhat hidden by its long fabric.
The whole rests on a base with concave and moulded sides, marked with Pradier's signature and the stamp of the Founder ''Susse Frères''.
In his work, the artist has been able to share with us his vision of the Beautiful Sex, in which Sensuality and Pudeur are mixed.
