Painting oil on panel "young Italian mountain man" of Emile Verbrugge (1856-1936). Emile Verbrugge is a fairly well known artist in the Akoun guide. He was a son of Pieter Verbrugge and Mathilde Fockenié. He started his studies under the guidance of Eduard Wallays and Bruno van Hollebeke at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts, where he had Flori van Acker as a fellow student. Later he went to the art academies of Antwerp and Brussels, where he had Karel Verlat and Jan Frans Portaels as his masters. His paintings showed mainly domestic scenes and animals. He was known as a great lover and painter of birds and other animals. His subjects were very varied. In addition to the many paintings he made during his stays abroad, he painted many portraits, still lifes, landscapes, etc. After winning a second prize in 1880 with his painting the Gauls defeated the Romans, he won the Rome Prize in 1883 with his painting on the imposed theme the resurrection of Lazarus. Following the tradition of the time and thanks to the grant associated with the Rome Prize, he travelled for three years in Italy, the Tyrol, North Africa and Egypt. On his tombstone is the following text in large letters: Here lies a wise man. A true artist, he lived only for his art, in solitude and simplicity. Work, goodness, righteousness and wisdom succeeded his whole life. Alas: why he had to suffer the injustice of menǃ what this injustice really was is still unknown. His paintings are in the collections of the Groeninge Museum, the provincial government of Namur and the Gaspar Museum-collection of the Archaeological Institute of Luxembourg, among others. His works, which are in the Groeninge Museum (self-portrait, Italian ploughman, Arab girl, Werkossen), were donated in 1950 by his widow. Our little Italian mountain man in his beautiful golden frame is touching in its sincerity.
I suoi dipinti raffigurano principalmente scene domestiche e animali. Era noto come grande amante e pittore di uccelli e altri animali. I suoi soggetti erano molto vari. Oltre ai numerosi dipinti realizzati durante i suoi soggiorni all'estero, dipinse molti ritratti, nature morte, paesaggi, ecc.
