Oil on canvas. As per the label on the back, the painting was presented at the 'Exhibition of Venetian Baroque Painting' in 1943, with the title 'In port at sunset' and the 'attribution to Marco Ricci. The attribution can be motivated by the executive ability, which through quick and loose brushstrokes, manages to fully render with sensitivity the natural reality of the stormy sea. See in this regard the similar images published by Rodolfo Pallucchini in the article 'Ricci studies: contribution to Marco' published in the journal Arte veneta (vol. IX, 1955). Ricci's landscape productions and seascapes (which, moreover, were not his most extensive production) are characterized by powerful and emotive lighting, dry and twisted trees, rocks and towers, cumuliform clouds that suddenly burst into vague splashes of blue, foaming waves, a complex repertoire that transfigures nature into a dramatic and restless representation, in which man is also included as an integral element. Such highly dramatic but at the same time scenic elements are also found in this painting, with some human figures, three men in a small boat in the foreground, who are barely distinguishable from the sea and the rocks surrounding them, as well as the ship on the left that wrecks engulfed by the sea.Restored and re-framed, the painting is presented in a styled frame.
