This bronze statue with brown patina features L'Espérance déçue after Auguste-Marie Barreau (?-1922). Dressed in classical costume, she is tinged with a slight sadness. This allegorical figure probably represents Dido, founder and queen of Carthage. In love with Aeneas, she committed suicide out of despair after being abandoned by the Trojan hero, under orders from Jupiter. Signed on the base: BARREAU. Marked on the lateral sides of the base: Médaille d'or à l'exposition des Beaux-arts 1865 (sic) [Gold medal at the 1865 Fine Arts Exhibition] and Acheté par l'État [Purchased by the State]. Circa :1870 Dim: W: 5,3 in - D: 4,5in - H: 17,5in. Dim: L:13,5cm, P:11,5cm, H:44,5cm. The sculptor Jean-Jules Salmson (1823-1902) created a bronze after the original plaster, that was edited by Barbezat et Cie.
